The following are policies affecting various KIN courses

Attendance Policy in KIN Activity Courses

The one-credit activity courses in the Department of Kinesiology are designed to improve each student's knowledge, skill, and/or fitness levels in the activity chosen. To maximize the chances of achieving these goals, instructors organize courses so that participation is a key element to a student's success. Attendance alone, however, does NOT ensure that a person will achieve all objectives for the class and, therefore, should not be the major or sole basis for evaluation.

Considering these factors, the departmental faculty established that the minimum requirement for eligibility to pass a one-credit activity course will be attendance at 85% of the class sessions (e.g., 85% of 29 sessions = 24.65 = 25 classes). If a student does not meet the minimum attendance requirement, the student will receive a 0.0 or N (no grade) grade for the course. Therefore:

• The 5th hour of absence in KIN 101 – KIN 108 courses will result in an N-grade for the course.
• The 5th hour of absence in KIN 111 – KIN 118 courses will result in a 0.0 grade for the course.

Students with a Disability in KIN Courses

Consistent with the policies of Michigan State University, the Department of Kinesiology conducts all courses, programs, and activities without discrimination on the basis of race, color, gender, religion, creed, national origin, political persuasion, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, or age. The educational needs of students with a disability are given particular attention in this policy.

Suggestions for Students with a Disability. The following sources of information will be helpful when determining whether to enroll in a KIN course, especially activity courses (KIN 101 through KIN 108). The KIN course descriptions in the MSU Course Descriptions book will help determine whether course content is appropriate for the student's needs. The MSU Schedule of Courses book provides information on the location of courses. Students with a disability should consider whether these facilities and outdoor fields are sufficiently accessible and accommodating to permit successful participation.

A student with a disability who needs accommodation(s) can help by notifying both the Department of Kinesiology (355-4730) and the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (353-9642) of her/his enrollment in the KIN course at the time of enrollment. This permits the department to: (a) relocate the course in an accommodating facility if necessary; (b) help the student to identify a personal assistant if needed; and (c) provide some in-service help, if needed, to the faculty member or graduate assistant who is teaching the course. Advance notice also facilitates communication between the Department of Kinesiology and the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities.

Students with a disability (like all students) are responsible for providing custom/personal sports equipment (e.g., eye-protection goggles in racquet sports, flotation gear for swimming, gloves or special grip devices in paddle sports) that is needed in activity courses.

Accommodating Students with a Disability. The Department of Kinesiology will facilitate participation by students with a disability in KIN courses by:

• Offering or relocating courses in accommodating facilities.
• Helping students with a disability to identify personal assistants in physical activity courses when needed. Although the Department is willing to help, the provision of personal assistants in activity courses is a responsibility of the student with a disability. Often potential personal assistants can be located through the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (353-9642 voice/TTY), the Service Learning Center (353-4400), or courses in adapted physical activity or therapeutic recreation. Volunteers who wish to serve as personal assistants can earn academic credit through KIN 466, Practicum in Adapted Physical Activity.
• Providing consultation and assistance to faculty members as needed.

Students, advisors, and faculty may contact the KIN Department Office at 355-4730 for assistance.

First Aid, CPR, and Blood Borne Pathogen Training

All instructors of activity courses (graduate assistants and faculty members) are required to maintain current First Aid and CPR certification. A copy of the certification cards must be on file in Room 134 IM Circle prior to the first day of classes. A renewal/challenge class will be provided during the fall teaching assistant orientation. Teaching assistants and faculty members who are assigned mid-year to teach activity courses must make their own arrangements to obtain these certificates.

CPR masks will be provided at each teaching station. Instructors may also provide their own personal masks.

All instructors of activity courses are required to complete blood-borne pathogen training prior to the first day of classes. This training is provided during the fall teaching assistant orientation. Teaching assistants and faculty members who are assigned mid-year to teach activity courses may arrange for training through the Biological Safety Office, 355-0153. A review copy of the Exposure Control Plan from the Office of Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Safety (ORCBS) is available in Room 134 IM Circle upon request. Annual renewal of blood-borne pathogen training can be done through the ORCBS web site (http://www.orcbs.msu.edu).
