Athletic Training Research Laboratory (ATRL)
The mission of the ATRL is to conduct research that contributes to bridging theory and practice in the field of Sports Medicine and Athletic Training. Areas of focus relate to the delivery of health care including the pathoetiology, prevention, assessment, and treatment of common orthopedic injuries. Specific themes of research includes the use of therapeutic modalities for the control of swelling and pain, the role of neuromuscular training in orthopedic pathology, sports injury epidemiology, the development of functional assessment protocols for injured athletes, and athletic training education.
Research Grants
Injury Risk Factors in Youth Football, Department of Kinesiology, College of Education, Michigan State University, July 2003 June 2005. The project adds two additional years to the study of youth football injury patterns. It adds to the baseline data, the evaluation of biologic maturity as an important risk factor in youth football as well as other youth sports. Principal Investigator: Dr. John W. Appropriate Medical Coverage for Intercollegiate Athletics, Michigan State University, July 2000 - June 2002. The project includes injury and daily treatment monitoring among intercollegiate sports team. The study includes 50 colleges and universities representing membership from the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA.
