Physical Education Teacher Education Degree Requirements

The physical education teaching emphasis within the bachelor of science degree in kinesiology is designed for undergraduate students who plan to become physical education teachers. The degree requirements and associated courses for the B.S. degree in kinesiology with a physical education teaching emphasis are specified in the MSU Academic Programs catalog. The components of study include:
  • MSU Requirements. All MSU requirements for the undergraduate degree.
  • KIN major. Core courses in the kinesiology major.
  • Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) emphasis courses. Courses required for the physical education teaching program emphasis.
  • Teaching Minor. Courses associated with the teaching minor, completed as part of the undergraduate degree program. Students must select a teaching minor for grades 6-12 and complete all associated requirements. A list of available teaching minors is posted on the Department of Teacher Education web site. Be sure to check the current supply and demand information provided by the College of Education.
Students who complete the B.S. degree in kinesiology with a physical education teaching emphasis must continue in a 5th-year post-BA teacher certification program administered by MSU's Department of Teacher Education to become eligible for State of Michigan teacher certification (KIN students are assigned to the secondary team). Additional information about teacher certification requirements is provided in the MSU Academic Programs catalog. Students may also choose to complete the teacher certification requirements at another college or university.
