Summer Scholars Program

This is your invitation to participate in a program designed to assist in preparing high school students for college attendance and nurture an interest in a career in education. The MSU College of Education Summer High School Scholars Program is a residential program on the campus of Michigan State University, offering a three-week college experience for current 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. The program is intended to increase college readiness, as well as nurture an interest in careers in education.


During this academic college preparation program all travel, lodging, and meal expenses are covered for students selected to participate in the program.

About the Program

This program includes:

  • Residential experience on the campus of Michigan State University
  • Three-week program for current 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students
  • Increase your college preparation and readiness
  • College academic skill development
  • Increase your understanding of a career in education
  • First-hand information on the College Application and Financial Aid/Scholarship processes

Criteria for Application

  • Current 9th, 10th, or 11th grade student in partnering urban school districts (Benton Harbor, Chicago, Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Saginaw)
  • Demonstration of academic potential
  • Recommendation of school faculty
  • Writing sample

Application Requirements

  • To complete this application, you will need:
    • Your Cumulative Academic GPA
    • Your SAT or PreSAT Score (if available)
    • An updated copy of your high school transcript
    • A parent email address (must be DIFFERENT from student email)
    • The name and email address of the School Representative who will complete your Recommendation Form
    • 300 word (or less) essay response to this question:
      (Current 9th & 10th graders):
      Why are you interested in attending the College of Education Summer High School Scholars Program on the campus of Michigan State University?

      (Current 11th graders):
      Why are you considering becoming a teacher? What interests you most about the teaching profession?

The application is due Friday, May 5th, 2017.

Early submission is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. Complete applications received by Friday, March 31st will get priority consideration and early admissions decisions.
