Getting Started

As you get started in the Elementary Teacher Preparation Program there are several questions that you should begin to reflect on:

  • What is the Elementary Teacher Preparation Program all about and who are the people who help make it run?
  • What are your goals for this program?
  • How will you "seize your education" and begin to work towards your goals?
  • What kind of teacher do you expect to be after finishing the Elementary Teacher Preparation Program?

Become Acquainted

Getting started in the Elementary Teacher Preparation Program means that you should become familiar with the procedures, people, and policies of the program.

Upon admission to Elementary Teacher Preparation Program, you will be assigned to a particular team and cohort. The cohorts are designated by interest and geographical location. For example, if you are interested in intern teaching in the East Lansing / Lansing area, or the Grand Rapids area then you will be assigned to the Lansing Area Team. If you are interested in intern teaching in the Detroit, Pontiac, or Flint areas then you will be assigned to the Detroit Area Team. The Elementary Teacher Preparation Program also has cohort options in Chicago and in international locations like Dubai. If you'd like more information about the Chicago internship, visit the Internship Areas page. Also, if you're interested in learning more about education at a global level, visit the the Global Educators Cohort Program website.

One important procedure in the Elementary Teacher Preparation Program is to understand that the TE courses will include a field component during the years TE 301 and TE 401/402 are taken. As part of giving you "hands-on" learning experiences in elementary schools, we place you in elementary schools around the Lansing area. See the Field Placement Policies page for more information.
