Sport Coaching & Leadership Master’s of Science & Graduate Certificate


If you are a coach, athletic director, recreational sport director, or leader in a sport-related field, the Sport Coaching and Leadership program can enhance your professional knowledge and skills. We offer two fully online graduate programs for sport coaches and leaders: a 30-credit Master of Science and a 10-credit Graduate Certificate.

Completely Online

The Sport Coaching and Leadership program is offered completely online with no requirements to visit campus, giving you flexibility of completing your coursework in your own context.

Applied Focus

Projects and course work in the Sport Coaching and Leadership program are aimed at affecting change by equipping students with skills for real world settings. With a Big Ten Quality education, you will develop skills to engage in critical thought and leadership on complex, interdisciplanary problems.

Grounded in the Sport Sciences

The courses you take in the Sport Coaching and Leadership program are taught by experts in their fields, and designed with the flexibility required by working professionals. With the rich tradition and history of the Kinesiology department at Michigan State University, our courses are rooted in the sport sciences and will prepare you to take on the biggest challenges of the modern sport environment. Our instructors take special care to design learning activities that will help you to apply the science of coaching and leadership to your every-day work as the leader of a sport program.

Graduates of our program will receive a master’s degree in sport coaching and leadership from a world-class Big Ten university. Students are taught by expert instructors, including faculty members in the renowned Institute for the Study of Youth Sports in the MSU Department of Kinesiology, as well as instructors that work with the United States Olympic Committee and the MSU Department of Athletics.


A network of like-minded colleagues is critical for advancing in the coaching profession. Our program provides ample opportunities to build your coaching network, with participation in our on-campus Summer Coaches’ School.
